Training Center

Why the TWB training center?

TWB facilitates the work professional translators offer to do for humanitarian organizations. This works very well most of the time, but for some language combinations it doesn't work because there simply aren't enough translators. Therefore, Translators without Borders decided to set-up training centers to train local healthcare translators. Our pilot site is in Nairobi, Kenya, where we will start the healthcare translators' training program in March 2012. The program will focus on Kiswahili as well as a number of the other 42 languages spoken in Kenya.

What is the Translators without Borders Training Center?

The training will be given in our Training Center in Nairobi, near the Kenyatta National Hospital. The program for Kiswahili translators starts with 5 days of intensive training, including topics such as What is translation, How to build a glossary, What is interpretation, How to translate videos, and many more. Several training modules focus on basic medical know-how about healthcare topics that are relevant for Africa, including infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, female health, diarrhea, pneumonia, and many other topics. During the training the lectures will include practical tips and tricks about how to translate, and how to write clearly in Kiswahili. After the initial training week, trainees will get some 20 pages of 'homework', which will be healthcare documents to be translated into Kiswahili or into the trainee's native language (Kikuyu, Kamba, Massai, and so forth). These translations will be reviewed by experienced translators and after a few weeks the trainees will return for a 'come-back day' to discuss the evaluation of their work, to do more exercises, and to receive another package of homework to be translated during the next 4 to 8 weeks. After successful completion of this homework, trainees will receive a Certificate describing the training and the translation experience. The program for other languages will be a bit shorter (2 to 3 days of initial training) but the set-up is very similar.
