{"id":211,"date":"2011-10-21T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-10-21T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.translatorswithoutborders.org\/blog\/2011\/10\/21\/language-is-essential-for-access-to-information\/"},"modified":"2024-08-22T14:35:20","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T14:35:20","slug":"language-is-essential-for-access-to-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/translatorswithoutborders.org\/blog\/language-is-essential-for-access-to-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Language is essential for access to information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Reprinted from the British Medical Journal, Oct. 18, 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Language is key to accessing information.\u00a0Speakers of a dominant language such as English\u2014including most highly educated professionals in developing countries\u2014may easily overlook the fact that the people who most need healthcare information are not likely to have a good understanding of English (or of French, Spanish, or Portuguese).<\/p>\n<p>Language is a large obstacle to comprehension, whether training community healthcare workers with varying levels of education or delivering information to the end consumers\u2014often people in rural communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last\">Ironically, people with scant knowledge of English tend to be those who need access to information the most. In the case of Africa, with 25% of the world\u2019s disease burden and only 2-3% of its doctors and nurses, well-informed healthcare workers are crucial. If, however, neither the people themselves nor the village healthcare workers meant to help them have strong English skills, the information they have access to will be understood imperfectly or not at all.
