So much so that the theme of International Translation Day, 2020 is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fit-ift.org\/international-translation-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Finding the words for a world in crisis.<\/a>\u201d COVID-19 has without question put the spotlight on the need for language support during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/covid-language-translation-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crisis<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>International Translation Day 2020, <\/strong>we\u2019re celebrating our translator community. Like many organizations, Translators without Borders and the translators who work with us have had to pivot to keep up with rapidly changing expectations. The need to overcome language barriers in providing public health information has never been clearer. Our translators have been at the forefront of providing accurate, clear, and consistent information to people who need it, in a language they understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, our translators\u2019 contributions are supporting more people than ever through an unprecedented crisis of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our community of 30,000 translators has come together to translate critical public-facing content into languages and formats that more people can understand. <strong>Since January, we\u2019ve translated 4.8 million words in 101 languages for the COVID-19 response<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For this very special International Translations Day, we interviewed two translators who are dedicating time to COVID-19 projects.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First and foremost, our community is made up of individuals with immense motivation to do good with their translation skills. Like most of us, they are living through times of intense change and readjustment, while finding time to volunteer. So today, on International Translation Day 2020, learn more about these two translators:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Barbara Pissane, based in Lyon, France<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Green-tea drinker and dark-chocolate lover<\/li><li>Proud recipient of two French RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) diplomas&nbsp;<\/li><li>Interested in international relations, ethics, refugees, human rights, and medical devices<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft that information is a right and everyone should have access to it. The organizations that we get to support through TWB aid people who are in situations where lack of information or misunderstandings can have serious consequences. No one should be left aside because of a language barrier, and I just hope that by volunteering my skills I can do a small part to help break these barriers.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite>Maria Paula Gorgone<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Barbara and Maria Paula are long-time supporters of Translators without Borders, and now volunteers to review translation tests for French and Spanish. As well as translating tasks, they help us verify new translators, which directly improves the quality of TWB\u2019s projects. Here are some of their major contributions as TWB translators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Barbara Pissane: translator<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>English to French translator, reviser and proofreader<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.translatorswb.org\/t\/translatathon-2019-the-results\/11123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Translation Marathon winner<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/translatorswithoutborders.org\/blog\/translation-million-words\/\">Won the Access to Knowledge Award for Empowerment in 2018&nbsp;<\/a><\/li><li>Revised over 50,000 words for COVID-19 projects, 700,000 words since starting with TWB&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maria Paula Gorgone: translator<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>English to Spanish translator and reviser<\/li><li>Revised 57,000 words for COVID-19 projects<\/li><li>Translated nearly 500,000 words since starting at TWB<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, translation work for COVID-19 is especially relevant, and significant for many. Barbara and Maria Paula have worked on the following projects for various nonprofit partners in the past few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Barbara Pissane: COVID-19 contributor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/covid-19library.org\/\"><strong>Core Group Consortium:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>This COVID-19 Library offers health workers and trainers access to quality assured, openly licensed content that can be used on mobile devices and shared amongst communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pih.org\/coronavirus-response\"><strong>Partners in Health:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>Translations included work on COVID-19 patient management for medical staff with a focus on health issues for poor and marginalized people. The information included how to initially assess a patient with the coronavirus, oxygen management, management of organ failure, COVID-19 triage and screening. Barbara also revised the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pih.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-09\/PIH%20Guide_COVID%20Part%20II%20Clinical%20Management_9.24.20.pdf\">COVID-19 Guide: Clinical Management of COVID-19<\/a>,\u201d a document used across many countries as a guide for community and clinical management of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/h2hnetwork.org\/\"><strong>H2H Network:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>Barbara revised several COVID-19 H2H Network resources for a joint project with TWB, to provide robust evidence on the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\"><strong>WHO:<\/strong><\/a> Barbara translated an online course for \u201cEmerging respiratory viruses, including nCoV: methods for detection, prevention, response and control,\u201d available on OpenWHO online. You can access the course <a href=\"https:\/\/openwho.org\/courses\/introduction-to-ncov.\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maria Paula Gorgone: COVID-19 contributor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acaps.org\/projects\/covid19\"><strong>ACAPS<\/strong><\/a>: Maria Paula revised a task for ACAPS, a nonprofit, independent information provider. The project focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acaps.org\/sites\/acaps\/files\/key-documents\/files\/20200901_acaps_informe_tecnico_mexico_migration_and_covid-19.pdf\">Mexico: migration and COVID-19<\/a>, a report that provides an overview how the spread of COVID-19 has led to a deteriorating situation for migrants in Mexico. It primarily focuses on how the pandemic has provided an opportunity for US immigration policy to become even more stringent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pih.org\/coronavirus-response\"><strong>Partners in Health:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>Maria Paula revised an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pih.org\/ma-response\">online resource<\/a> titled \u201cCOVID-19 Disproportionately Impacts Immigrants in Massachusetts.\u201d This story is about the work of the Massachusetts Community Tracing Collaborative (COVID-19 contact tracing initiative) and how contact tracers are working with immigrant communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.warchild.org.uk\/what-we-do\"><strong>War Child:<\/strong><\/a> Maria Paula worked on a subtitling project, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/timedtext_video?ref=share&amp;v=gjo1Z9f7FQU\">Child Safeguarding during the COVID-19 response<\/a>. She also revised the Child Protection Case Management guide for development or humanitarian settings. It is a way of organizing and carrying out work to address children\u2019s and families\u2019 needs in an appropriate, systematic and timely manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msf.org.uk\/issues\/covid-19-coronavirus-disease\"><strong>MSF (M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res or Doctors without Borders):<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>This translated document, on \u201cEmergency and Basic Critical Care for COVID-19 in Resource-Limited Settings\u201d provides clinical guidance for COVID-19 patient care in MSF\u2019s existing field projects in resource-limited settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>WHO:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>Maria Paula joined fellow translators to work on an online course on emerging respiratory viruses. The training materials on respiratory diseases and critical care for the WHO stood out as an impactful project for her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI remember working on this task very early on the pandemic, at a time where everything was a bit confusing and there was a lot of misinformation going around.
